The contributions of the partners to the cooperatives make up the social capital, having this one the most participation inside the patrimony of these entities, being the social capital one of the items that represent the mayor strength for the solidity of the company, and that is important figure to determine the financial situation of the same. However, the social capital of cooperatives, and more specifically of the savings and credit cooperatives, plays a very social role and represents a savings of the partners that is used to offer loans to them, getting interests that enters to form part of the profitability and contribute to the economic development, among other activities that can be developed according to the rule that governs the institution of saving and credit. Thus, the social capital of savings and credit cooperatives is considered as a foreign resource that is registered in the liability but has a special reserve as funds for education and other social and cultural interests, which are common for partners.
With the advent of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) and their mandatory application for the presentation of information, the concept of capital has been confused since IAS 32 of these standards requires classifying the external resources as a liability, which impact negatively the heritage and liabilities of these entities. With the development of this document, the general objective is, to make a small argument analysis of the effect that will cause to the financial structure of the credit unions, to implement IAS 32 of the International Financial Reporting Standards to the financial instrument of Capital.
The method used to develop the topic is documentary analysis, to observe the analysis that other authors have made and contribute, and generate a contribution to the problems of the cooperative sector in Colombia.
The work is developed in four sections that define each one a specific objective: 1. To develop a referential framework based on the Colombian norm. 2. Observe the liabilities and heritage of the credit union´s financial structure, and the impact on each of them, with an emphasis on social capital, to implement IFRS on these financial instruments. 3. Determine the effects of implementing IAS 32 in the savings credit unions. 4. Develop the conclusions regarding the analysis developed and propose the recommendations to be considered.
