The current descriptive exploratory study, evaluated the behavior of the intraocular pressure (IOP) in the eyes of healthy military scuba divers from the National Navy who were subjected to variations of atmospheric pressure, simulated in the multiple hyperbaric chamber of the Naval Hospital in Cartagena, during 60 minute sessions at a maximum of 60 feet deep, measuring the IOP at regular intervals of barometic pressures in ascent and descent and while breathing compressed air. 48 eyes of 24 divers were included in this study, where 91.7% of them were males, with an average age of 30.6 (DE=5.5) years old.
The average basal IOP by the level of the sea was 14,3 mmHg, in terms of the central pachymetry, decreasing to 13.1 mmHg at its minimum (1,2 mmHg of decrease) at 60 ft deep. Nevertheless, during the ascent stop at 30 ft. the average IOP kept decreasing until it reached 11,9 mmHg. (p<0.001). Once the session was over, the average IOP reached a value of 13.1 mmHg, evidently lower and Statistically significant in comparison to the initial IOP. The decrease of the IOP reached at maximum depth and the additional decrease during the ascent phase, with a final IOP lower than the base IOP, suggests that there is a residual and prolonged effect of the atmospheric pressure over it. Subjection to atmospheric pressures greater than 1 ATA, without registering an increase in intraocular Pressure in the scuba divers healthy of the National Navy, would discard the exercise of diving as an activity that involves the risk to develope glaucoma in healthy people.
