The present investigation intends to propose alternatives for the creation of a segmented social marketing strategy oriented to satisfy the demand of blood Colombia. Despite the fact that the average donation rate and the satisfaction of the blood demand have increased during the last years, in 2016, 11% of the demand was reported to be satisfied and a significant percentage of the donated blood units (7.8%) had to be discarded due to defined causes such as infectious reactivity, expiration, storage failures, among others, which implies an economic impact on the national health system. This shows that it is necessary to manage changes in social marketing strategies to increase donation in Colombia and decrease the number of units of discarded blood. For this purpose reference is made to the global and local context of blood donation, a review is made of the aspects and motivations that positively or negatively influence people to make the decision to donate or not, the different aspects that may be influencing the satisfaction of the need for blood in Colombia are analyzed, and guidelines are proposed to structure a segmented social marketing strategy to meet the demand for blood.
