River cargo transport is a cargo movement system through rivers and fluvial channels, which has not been implemented in all countries, therefore, in this document the applicability of this model is analyzed in order for it to be developed in Colombia, taking advantage of the country water wealth and, mainly, that the Magdalena River crosses the national territory from south to north. To carry out this work, a process of searching for information, the quality of obtaining official documents, research products and comparative methods was carried out to understand in a broader way the importance of this industry, analyzing the river transport systems. Existing in China, Europe and South America, finding that the most advanced correspond to the Yangtsé, Danubio and Paraná rivers, all of them located in regions of the aforementioned continents, respectively. This analysis allows, through this article, to present a proposal that allows to advance the discussion regarding the possibility of implementing a similar system in the main water tributaries of the country, starting with a pilot test in the aforementioned Magdalena River, for this form, determine if its implementation, significantly reduce the value of freight in cargo transportation from maritime port areas to the interior of Colombia and, if possible, reduce the carbon footprint generated by land transportation of cargo.
