Preterm delivery is currently an important cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality,
the group of late preterm newborns has presented a considerable increase in its
incidence secondary to the indications for the management of different obstetric
pathologies that lead to an early termination of pregnancy, on the other hand,
multiple risk factors for presenting a preterm birth are recognized, among which the
antecedent of premature birth stands out; Due to the multiple adverse neonatal
outcomes of preterm infants compared to term infants, it was considered important
to assess the causes of delivery at this gestational age at the Central Military
Hospital, between January 2016 and January 2020, as well as to determine whether
the deliveries medically indicated had supported according to the different guidelines
and available evidence; The medical records of all the patients with late preterm
delivery were analyzed and a study with a descriptive cross-sectional design was
carried out, where sociodemographic variables, maternal and fetal causes were
evaluated, showing a preterm delivery rate of 7.69%; Among the causes,
spontaneous preterm delivery was the most prevalent, of the medically indicated
preterm delivery, hypertensive disorders represented the majority, followed by
premature rupture of membranes (PROM) and non-reassuring fetal status. A low
rate of Induced preterm labor without evidence-based medical indication was found.
