Abstract
The Cachama Blanca (Piaractus brachypomus) is a species of fish with economic importance within the fishing activity and mainly aquaculture in Colombia. Due to characteristics that have awakened the interest in the cultivation of this species, such as the speed of growth, resistance to parasites and diseases, and rusticity. The present study carried out a macro and micro anatomical description of the encephalon of Piaractus brachypomus, identifying the main structures that comprise it. For this, a histological analysis and a macroscopic description of some regions of the brain (olfactory bulbs, telencephalic hemispheres, diencephalon, mesencephalon, cerebellum and spinal cord) were performed, describing the most important nuclei of each structure from transverse and sagittal sections of the brain. The biological material that was processed were 8 white cachama fingerlings, which after being sacrificed were made an incision in the skull, in order to perform the extraction of the brain, which was processed and cuts of 5μm were made. Thickness stained with the Nissl staining technique. Subsequently, a rostrocaudal mapping of the different areas of the brain was carried out, where different nuclei / tracts / regions could be observed. Regarding the anatomy of the brain reported in other teleosts it is mainly that, being a very versatile fish as far as the habitat is concerned, there is a development of certain areas of the brain, among them an optical lobe of a size greater than that reported to other teleosts which indicates that it is an animal of diurnal habit, and also has an absence of an olfactory tract, which could be indicating a greater speed of the arrival of olfactory stimuli.
