Abstract
Competence based education according to Braslavsky 2006 is “the development of complex skills that allow students to think and act in various fields¨
The colon and rectal surgery is a branch of General surgery responsible for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the colon-rectum and anus.
This specialty even more important nowdays, because colorectal cancer is the third most diagnosed cancer in men and the second in women worldwide.
Medical education should integrate knowledge, development of activities and practice. During medical training you should try to gear the biology of the disease, diagnosis, and treatment. We would not achieve anything with knowledge and skill without a social context. It is not praiseworthy to know what to do without having the resources to apply.
For decades medical education has been based on the construction of knowledge and the necessary skills are developed to exercise, it but, with the avalanche of information in recent years, which has come with globalization, it is important to land this medical knowledge in a national and even regional context. It is useless to have a knowledge if you do not have the tools to apply it. The concept of health/disease is linked to the social situation, medical training must have a universal generality but a community specificity, an applicability with context, dependent on the environment.
The purpose of this analysis is to review the method of medical learning in coloproctology based on competencies, always providing a context for its adequate applicability.
