| spa |

dc.description.abstractenglish | Howler monkeys are one of the most studied primates in Colombia. Previous studies about their diets, behavior and seed dispersal have been made in Colombia. However, there is no recent studies about diet selectivity in this species. Diet selectivity is defined as the main factors influencing the selectivity of different dietary elements. Here I review the previous
studies on the diet of the red howler monkeys, identifying the main dietary elements in their diets and also, a review of the previous work on diet selection in the Atelidae family and other primate groups. As a main conclusion of this review, there is still no generalized consensus about the main factor influencing the dietary selectivity of red howler monkeys, however, different factors as percentage of carbohydrates, tannins as well as the forest productivity, may be influencing this selectivity. | eng |
