The treatment of wastewater is one of the cornerstones for the reuse of water sources and the reduction of the human environmental impact. The hybrid UASB reactors have emerged as a high impact technology, with important efficiency and low cost for the treatment of wastewater, especially gray water. Among the main sources of gray water production are those related to the industry and domestic use of the laundry. The aim of this project is to evaluate the efficiency and behavior of the hybrid UASB reactor in the removal of organic matter, in the treatment of gray water, especially laundry water.
The study has 3 phases: 1) characterization of the laundry water, 2) conditioning of the hybrid UASB reactor with solutions of changing concentrations of laundry water and synthetic water to work it, 3) Evaluation of the parameters of effectiveness in the Laundry gray water treatment: pH, COD, BOD, nitrogen, phosphorus, UV254, chlorides and alkalinity. Removals of organic matter are observed in terms of Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) of up to 58 ± 0.1%. The values of the buffer index indicate that the process is stable. The second and fifth phases of the reactor conditioning, with 25% of ARL and 75% AS, present contrasts in the removal of COD, claiming that the source of laundry water were different places, it is clear that the products and technologies used in the washing process influence directly with the capacity that the anaerobic process may have with this type of water. Although the anaerobic process was stable, but there was no significant degradation of organic matter.
