The need to inform the neogranadina student community about the risks inherent in the consumption of psychoactive substances (SPA) that currently circulate in the media frequented by young people was the reason why the Faculty of Basic and Applied Sciences of the UniMilitar invited to William Fernando Garzón Méndez, a chemist from the National University of Colombia with twenty-six years of experience in the Technical Investigation Corps of the Office of the Attorney General, to deliver on August 13, in the maximum classroom of the Bogotá headquarters, the conference «The new psychoactive substances. Forensic challenges ». During the conference, which was part of the Enamórate de las Ciencias program, of the aforementioned faculty, Garzón explained that although the new SPAs are made based on known substances, such as cannabis, amphetamine and methamphetamine, the active ingredients of these are subjected to chemical manipulations that, when carried out illegally and without any control, result in compounds whose use is gradually configuring a public health problem that must be quickly addressed. In this order of ideas, informative activities such as this can play an important role in preventing potential consumers about the danger they incur when using SPA.
