Abstract
The district of Rozo located in the flat area of the municipality of Palmira in the department of Valle del Cauca, Colombia, historically has had problems with the supply of drinking water. At present, the precious liquid is obtained through an underground water well; and through a gravity aqueduct system built 60 years ago, it is distributed to the population. The flow rate supplied is insufficient for the population's demand and the pressure head does not allow the fluid to reach the highest and most remote areas. In the last 20 years, the municipality of Rozo has experienced considerable demographic growth because it is located in an agro-industrial area of high tourist value, and its proximity to the largest industrial centers in the southwest of Colombia. Due to this expansion, the municipality of Rozo has merged with its neighbors La Torre and La Acequia, therefore, the three are considered as a center populated in block.
In this paper, different alternatives for the water supply of the Rozo district are evaluated. It was established that the existing aqueduct system is not sufficient to meet the needs of the population. Different supply alternatives are evaluated: 1) water from the Cauca river, taken on the right bank of the river, 2) from the Amaime river, 3) from the drinking water aqueduct network of the municipality of Palmira, and 4) from the underground aquifers through two new wells.
It was observed that the alternative of taking the fluid from the Palmira aqueduct network is the viable technical and economic option to solve the population's supply problems, since it allows obtaining the liquid already treated without the need to build a new treatment plant, which would raise construction and operation costs considerably.
Finally, the technical criteria and economic evaluation of the final layout of the aqueduct system are shown, with emphasis on satisfying the demand requirements of the population and complying with the regulations in force in Colombia for the sector of drinking water and basic sanitation.
