Abstract
The increase in the use of PET plastic as a raw material to make bottles and containers of different types of products is a worrying reality. As a result of the implementation of the strategy of the industrial sector to improve its economic benefits and cover a growing demand related to population growth mainly focused on cities. PET plastic bottles have a polluting impact on the environment that affects not only ecosystems and their species but also seriously endangers the quality of life of human beings. Therefore, despite the development of strategies and plans aimed at reducing consumption, reusing, and recycling PET plastic, there is still evidence of a high percentage of material reaching the landfills of the world's most populated cities. Bogotá is Colombia's capital. In 2018 its inhabitants generated 2,406,093 tons per year of urban solid waste. This amount is likely to increase year by year despite the waste management strategies aimed at stimulating separation at the source of these. PET plastic is a type of material that can be used in its entirety. However, a large percentage lost in the Doña Juana Landfill due to incorrect disposal of the material at the source. Hence, where an opportunity for improvement is evident in the collection processes carried out, seeking to increase the amount of PET plastic bottles collected so that it can be used in reuse or recycling processes. In this way, this document presents the design considerations for a Reverse Logistics Network, identifying the variables that have allowed three international references to be leaders in the collection of this type of material with recovery rates of approximately 95%. Through a correlational study carried out between identified dependent variables (Education and training, the distance between containers, use of specific containers for PET and DRS system) that influences the increase in the amount of PET plastic bottles collected in the three selected countries, to then estimate the amount of PET to be collected in the city of Bogotá.
