The phenomenon of contemporary globalization and the great advances in communication and transportation technologies have created an environment conducive to the strengthening of organized crime groups by transforming their room for maneuver at the transnational level, diversifying their actions and, consequently, increasing the income derived from their criminal activities. This has become a global security problem for the States. This is the case of the Clan del Golfo organized crime group in Colombia, which has benefited from this phenomenon by establishing illegal networks and alliances at a global level, benefiting its criminal activities and income. In this sense, this research asks the question: Why does the transnational actions of the Clan del Golfo organized crime group represent a challenge for the security of the Colombian State? For this purpose, a follow-up of press documents was carried out, where the most recent data and facts regarding this criminal association were collected. We found that the transnational characteristics of the criminal actions of the Clan del Golfo represent a series of challenges for the Colombian State, given its para-state dynamics and the transnational drug trafficking that feeds its operations and existence.
