Abstract
Transport systems can be represented through multimodal network models; The latter have experienced a strong development over the last two decades in their application to urban passenger transport systems, however, their application to intercity freight systems has been much more limited. On the other hand, although the modeling principles related to graph theory and networks, mathematical models of optimization and principles of microeconomic theory, are useful to treat both problems, their specific characteristics are quite different, making it impossible to carry out an extension or Adaptation of models developed in one case (eg urban) to their application in the other (eg interurban) In this work a critical analysis of the literature is carried out regarding the development of national cargo transport models. In each case, the theoretical assumptions and theoretical approaches and the characteristics for their practical application are studied, and a comparative analysis is carried out in the case of network models, which evaluates the advantages and limitations of the different approaches proposed in the Specialized literature. In conclusion, the most relevant aspects that require research and future developments and the possible ways of dealing with these developments are specified.
