AIM: Describe the refractive results and complications of patients who underwent phakic intraocular lens implantation at the Central Military Hospital, Bogota-Colombia during the 2015-2018 period.
Methods: This article was designed as a case series study, where the eyes that had ICL V4c phakic intraocular lens implant for the correction of moderate to high myopia were evaluated. Undercorrected distance (UDVA) and corrected (CDVA) visual acuity, refraction, intraocular pressure (IOP), endothelial cell density and adverse events were evaluated at 6 months.
Results: The study included 46 eyes of 27 patients. The mean spherical equivalent (EE) was: -7.33 0.66DP, 6 months after surgery the EE was -0.31 10DP, with 83% of eyes within the range of 0.50 DP for refractive objective and 100% of eyes within 1.00 DP. The mean AVSC was: 0.17 0.03logMAR. The efficacy and safety indices were: 0.68 and 0.82 respectively. In no case there was loss of visual acuity lines during the follow-up. The IOP remained stable over time, there were no cataracts or opacity of the lens and the loss of endothelial cells was 0.2% after 6 months of follow-up.
CONCLUSIONS: Good results were obtained in UDVA, refraction and stable intraocular pressures during follow-up, which suggest the use of the ICL V4c lens as an alternative for the management of moderate-high myopia in Colombia for patients in whom refractive surgery with laser excimer cannot be performed.
