Abstract
This study looks into possible alternatives to handle the thermo-mineral water focused on the inactivation of total coliforms found into this kind of water, which come from the hotel industry of Paipa. These are poured down after being used into a system called “dock”. Its main use is to accumulate and regulate the volume thrown out to the Chicamocha River.
This water is exposed to external factors such as rain, weather changes and animal contact, provoking a possible alteration of its physic-chemical features presenting a potential risk of affectation to the human health and to the Chicamocha River. Seen from the environmental side, these factors are a huge problem affecting the users of the irrigation district from the Chicamocha river, people who make uptakes of it for their agricultural activities. Total coliforms are seen and, it is determined that they are over the normal levels permitted and reported into the law, indicating that this water is not fulfilling the quality requirements, but it is also causing a great impact into the hydric resource and the crops where the irrigation water is being used.
On the other hand, making a careful treatment to this type of water is important; so, in this article, a bibliographic review is done in order to determine the possible protection alternatives to eliminate and/or control the total coliforms found into this water; and hence, avoiding the negative environmental impacts caused on the hydric resource. All of this, throughout the description of treatments based on the solar radiation which permits the inactivation of those total coliforms.
