Abstract
In civil engineering, the protection of people's lives is paramount in the event of
any accident that happens in a work, either in its construction or operation. For such
For this reason, in recent decades, quantities of companies and engineers have dedicated themselves to
standardize the fire protection market in the different buildings,
based on automatic sprinklers. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) is
founded in the United States in 1986 and is responsible for setting standards for
fire protection and minimum requirements, including agreements for the
training, installation and use of fire extinguishing methods, as well as the
regulations for the fire department and security personnel. But it's not just about
of a document that determines the measures and various equipment to be installed, but also the
key to ensuring that people are safe in the event of a fire and do not cause
a large number of deaths and possible disasters in different cities and their surroundings in
the world.
In its first version, the NFPA and the first standards that focused on
fire protection in buildings was established "the code of fire exits
buildings” but in this the minimum requirements of the exits of
evacuation. However, like everything else, regulations evolve to be better and better
There are currently 4 main NFPA standards: 14 (Standard for the
installation of riser systems and hoses), 25 (Inspection, testing and
maintenance of water-based fire protection systems), the 72nd (National
fire alarm and signaling code) and 101; where the last mentioned is the most important
of all, since it details the minimum requirements for each corridor, wall, stairs and other
3
components of any type of structure from residential to commercial and
industrial. This NFPA 101 also focuses on each of the different types of
buildings and although it is a manual that can be said to be the most complete in the world
in fire protection, it is a regulation that with the passage of time has to
continue to evolve, because several of its subchapters and minimum requirements
detailed are still open to be modified and some to write them as if they were
new requirements because the more experiences of accidents that have occurred make this
regulation is better in terms of speech safety.
